Iolani Fair boasts new, green 'Eco-Square' this weekend

Advertiser staff

The annual 'Iolani Fair on Friday and Saturday gets a boost of green this year with the addition of its Eco-Square, a new educational attraction with more than 20 exhibits touting how to live more environmentally aware.

The feature is spearheaded by 'Iolani graduate Sherman Wong and the school's Good 2B Green club.

Eco-Square features student-run interactive green games, UPC Hawaii Wind's 6-foot tall display, and University of Hawaii-Manoa School of Architecture student green projects. Collections will be accepted for Mayor Mufi Hannemann's athletic shoe recycling project, which turns old sneakers and running shoes into the padding beneath public playgrounds.

Other exhibits will be offered by Hawaii Biofuels, Pacific Biodiesel, Board of Water Supply, Hawaii 2050 Sustainability, City & County of Honolulu, 21st Century Ahupua`a, Hawaii Energy Connection, Powerlight, Hawaii Lumber Productions Assn., Hawaii Pacific Steel Framing Alliance, Design Partners Inc., Aloha Aina Earth Day, Intrade Corp., Greengrid Roofs, Synlawn, Hoonani Landscape and others. Seminars will be conducted on Xeriscape, energy-efficient lighting, biodegradable styrofoam, QiGong, and more.

The 'Iolani Fair will use biodegradable plastic bags in its marketplace and sell reusable Good 2B Green bags at a minimal cost.

The fair takes place April 18 and 19 from noon to 10:30 p.m. on campus. This year's Olympic theme is "Go for the Gold". Admission is free. Call 943-2339 for information.
