NFL: Giants' Strahan, Shockey play waiting game

By Tom Rock
Newsday

Jerry Reese yesterday discussed pending decisions regarding the fates of Michael Strahan and Jeremy Shockey, only one of which he controls directly.

The Giants' general manager said he does not expect Strahan to make a decision on whether he will return to play in 2008 before next weekend's draft.

"We would like for Michael to make a decision before then, but I don't think that would happen," Reese said. "He deserves to take whatever time he needs to take. Sooner is better for us, but it's not going to weigh on any decisions on what we are going to do in the draft."

Reese said Strahan's mind could take much longer to make up. "We would like to know before training camp," he said. "He will make a decision before then, I think."

As for the decision Reese can steer — the fate of Shockey — his statement that "everybody is tradable, no matter what" continued to swizzle rumors of the tight end's imminent departure. Shockey has been the subject of trade speculation for several weeks, and Reese confirmed he has fielded calls from teams interested in acquiring him. But, Reese emphatically stated, the Giants have made no calls shopping Shockey.

"Anything can happen in personnel, guys, I always say that," Reese said. "But right now, Jeremy Shockey is our starting tight end and we are looking forward for him to be back on the field for us this fall."

Less certain is how much Shockey wants to come back. There have been reports that he is wary of returning to the Giants, a team some think was better prepared to make its Super Bowl run after he went on season-ending injured reserve.

Reese said he spoke to Shockey recently and tried to offer insight on that topic. "I think he wants to be part of the football team," Reese said.
