Gas leak forces evacuation of 20 residents in Kalihi

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Fire Department and Police Department evacuated approximately 20 residents on Colburn Street in Kalihi last night because of a gas line leak.

HPD closed Colburn Street for approximately two blocks diamondhead of Mokauea Street. There were no injuries or fire and all residents returned to their homes after The Gas Company repaired the line.

The leak occurred in a synthetic natural gas supply line at 517 Colburn St. at about 4:50 p.m. HFD sent an engine company, a hazardous materials unit and a battalion chief to the scene.

HFD responders isolated the scene, identified the problem, and asked the residents from three homes on Colburn Street to leave until the leak was secured. HFD HazMat responders excavated the small leaking line and stopped the hole with a wooden plug by 5:30 p.m.

The Gas Company patched the gas line by 6:10 p.m. The street was reopened and all residents were allowed back into their homes by 6:15 p.m.
