HAWAII BRIEFS
Man critically injured in crash

Advertiser Staff

An 18-year-old man was critically injured yesterday morning in a single-car crash on Moanalua Freeway.

The man, who was the passenger, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition, Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic said. The 29-year-old man who was driving was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Police said the two were traveling west on Moanalua Freeway in a white 1997 Chevy four-door sedan when they struck a freeway embankment near the Ala Kapuna Street overpass at 12:03 a.m.

The Fire Department was called to extract one of the injured people, who was pinned in the vehicle.

Police said speed and alcohol were involved.

BODY FOUND IN WATER IDENTIFIED

Big Island police have identified a body found in waters off Hilo on Sunday as that of 76-year-old Philip L. Monette of Pahoa.

Beachgoers found Monette's body floating in the water at Reed's Bay and brought it to shore before calling 911.

Police said they have not ruled out foul play.

In Puna yesterday, a decomposed body, possibly of an elderly man, was found in the lower Puna subdivision of Kalapana Seaview Estates. The body was near a rustic cabin surrounded by waist-high vegetation.

Police said the advanced state of decomposition made it impossible to immediately identify the body. Alternative means will be used, police said.

The case has been classified as a coroner's inquest.

Autopsies will be performed today in both cases to determine cause and manner of death.

Anyone with information on the Monette case can call Detective Rio Amon-Wilkins at 808-961-2386. To report information on the Puna case, call Detective Reed Mahuna at 808-961-2384. People may also call the Police Department's nonemergency line at 808-935-3311 or Big Island CrimeStoppers in Hilo (808-961-8300) or Kona (808-329-8181).

MAN ARRESTED FOR SHOTGUN THREATS

Police yesterday arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with a threatening incident involving shotguns in Wai'anae.

The suspect was arrested fronting 86-260 Farrington Highway in Wai'anae at 4:50 p.m. on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening, two counts of reckless endangering and a firearm offense. Charges were pending.

Police said they received a report that a man with two shotguns went to the Wai'anae home of two males who allegedly assaulted his younger brother in school. The man arrived at the residence at 1:04 p.m. yesterday, fired two rounds in the air and pointed the shotguns at a 26-year-old man.

The man left the home when he could not find the males he was looking for. He dropped one of the shotguns on the street, and police recovered the weapon.
