The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said today it has settled a case on behalf of an employee of Holy Family Catholic Academy who was allegedly fired because she complained about national origin and gender discrimination.
The EEOC alleged that Holy Family Catholic Academy retaliated against long-term employee Roxanne Castilliano due to her complaints, leading to her termination.
In addition to paying Castilliano $100,000, Holy Family agreed to "revise its policies and procedures, including the development of a clear complaint procedure for complaints of discrimination and retaliation, training on EEO laws, and reporting and recordkeeping required under the decree," the EEOC said in a news release.
"We commend Holy Family Catholic Academy for making changes to ensure that complaints are handled properly and that proper monitoring is done when a complaint of discrimination arises," said Anna Y. Park, Regional Attorney for the EEOC's Los Angeles District Office. "We hope other employers take their lead and take the necessary steps to review and reaffirm its policies and conduct proper training."
