Plane makes belly landing; all safe

A local air freight carrier's Beech twin-engine aircraft made a successful emergency landing shortly after noon yesterday at Honolulu Airport after one of its landing gears failed.

The pilot and co-pilot of the Kamaka Air Cargo plane were not injured. Company officials said the plane was headed to Moloka'i but returned to Honolulu.

State Department of Transportation spokesman Scott Ishikawa said the pilot reported problems with the plane's right landing gear.

The pilot did a flyover at Honolulu Airport and tower officials confirmed the gear was not down.

The pilot landed the aircraft with only the left landing gear deployed. Witnesses described it as a belly landing. A small fire was started by the friction of the landing but was extinguished without incident.
