WAIPI'O — The Interscholastic League of Honolulu's newest school has its first league champion.

Matt Westmoreland, a sophomore at Island Pacific Academy, defeated Punahou's Doug Ho, 6-2, 6-2, yesterday to win the ILH tennis singles championship at Patsy Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Island Pacific, located in downtown Kapolei, is in its fourth year of existence and still does not have juniors or seniors.

"It feels good; I'm proud to be the first (ILH champion) at our school," said Westmoreland, who lost in the league quarterfinals last year. "It's good to represent the school like this."

Accentuating each shot vocally and giving himself outward encouragement and reminders, Westmoreland played with a purpose and denied Ho any chances to get close.

"I just went in being confident," Westmoreland said. "I played with confidence and stayed focused. I didn't get too mad."

Island Pacific principal James Nelligan, who was in attendance to cheer Westmoreland on, said the school has about 600 students in grades pre-kindergarten through 10. He said it sponsors 15 sports for boys and girls, mostly at the intermediate level. IPA is in its third year of ILH membership.

"We're literally the newest kids on the block, so it's nice to make a splash like this so early in the process," Nelligan said. "We had a few kids medal at the state meet in swimming and diving, so we're growing slowly but surely, without recruiting. It's great as a school to have Matt win this, because he's a great kid. We'll be having a lot of 'firsts' after this."

Winning an ILH title is nothing new for Punahou junior Kristin Lim, or her family. Lim repeated as league champ yesterday by defeating 'Iolani's Nikki Castel, 6-1, 6-4.

Castel hung tough in the second set, but Lim jumped out to a 40-love lead in the final game before ending it with an ace.

"I figured I better finish it and concentrate hard," said Lim, whose brothers Robbie and Mikey also won ILH singles titles. "I let loose a few points (in the second set), my feet weren't moving and Nikki hit some nice shots. She's a great player, and I realized I needed to step my game up."

Punahou seniors Alex Ching and Erik Shoji repeated as doubles champions, despite a very busy sports week for both.

Ching won the ILH golf title on Monday at Waialae Country Club, before dashing off to CORP to team with Shoji in their quarterfinal victory. On Tuesday, Shoji went straight from their semifinal win to the Buffanblu's volleyball match against Kamehameha.

Shoji is a three-time Advertiser All-State volleyball player.

"At least he was fresh for our match," Ching said of Shoji's double-duty Tuesday.

Punahou tennis coach Rusty Komori said he nominated Ching and Shoji for the school's Athlete of the Year award.

"They're a terrific combination, and to me, they epitomize what a student-athlete should be," Komori said. "We spent hours and hours on planning schedules to make (the double-duties) work, but when you look at them as people and as athletes, you can't help but want to make it work."

In the girls doubles championship, Punahou's Ashley Ohira and Ashley Nakaoka defeated Sacred Hearts' Kelsey Daguio and Kelly Domingo, 6-1, 6-0.
