UH women take third in WAC golf

Advertiser Staff

After leading the first two days, the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine fell to third in yesterday's final round of the Western Athletic Conference Championships, at Sunnyside Golf Course, in Fresno, Calif.

The 'Bows opened with rounds of 301-302, but shot 314 yesterday and were passed by Fresno State (295-905) and New Mexico State (298-912).

It was Hawai'i's second straight third-place finish, which is the best it has ever done.

Hawai'i sophomore Corie Hou (79-224) tied for fourth individually, along with Baldwin graduate Kelly Nakashima (73-224), an Idaho senior. Hou also finished fourth last year.

UH senior Xyra Suyetsugu (76-230) shared 11th for the second straight year and was named all-WAC first team. She was followed by senior Lisa Kajihara (78-235), in 17th place, Phyllis Lai (81-236) and Carolina Perez (83-240).

Fresno's Laura Luethke earned medalist honors at 73-220, after a runnerup finish in 2007. New Mexico State's Suteera Chanachai (75-222) was second.

Moanalua graduate Iris Ocariza, playing for Boise State, tied for 18th at 78-236 and Nevada's Jennie Pleas, from Kaua'i, was 32nd (83-242).
