Parker McLachlin shot a 2-under-par 68 and is a shot off the leaders and fellow Hawai'i golfer Dean Wilson had an ace and finished 1-over 71 yesterday in the EDS Byron Nelson Championship at Irving, Texas.

McLachlin, a Punahou alum and former Honolulu resident, had three birdies and a bogey for nines of 34-34. After a bogey-5 on the third hole, McLachlin birdied holes Nos. 7 and 8. He also birdied the 10th.

McLachlin was in a group of eight players at 68 that included 10th-ranked Adam Scott, the only player from the top 10 in the world ranking in the field.

Wilson, a Castle High alum and former Kane'ohe resident, had his hole in one on the par-3 fifth hole, his 14th on the day as he started on the back nine at the TPC Four Seasons Resort course.

He finished with two birdies, an ace, three bogeys and a double bogey.

Ryan Moore, Mathew Goggin and Eric Axley shot 67s, the highest-scoring first-round leaders at the Nelson since 1984.

Axley, who overcame an early bogey with four consecutive birdies from Nos. 4-7, was in the lead alone until he bogeyed the 429-yard 18th hole. He missed the final fairway and hit his approach into a greenside bunker — the only bunker he found all day.

Defending champion Scott Verplank shot a 72. Verplank is playing in his 22nd Nelson, the most among active players.
