Pearl City gains semis with rout of Roosevelt

PEARL CITY — The feeling of deja vu could be a promising one for Pearl City in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association baseball playoffs.
The Chargers, who rode a hitting barrage to the OIA championship last year, put up some more offensive fireworks yesterday in a 10-0 quarterfinal victory over visiting Roosevelt. The game was shortened to 4 2/3 innings due to the 10-run rule.
Western Division champ Pearl City, ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 11-2 in league play and will face East runner-up Castle (10-4) in tonight's semifinals at Patsy Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park.
First pitch is set for about 6:30, and the game will be televised live statewide on OC16.
Roosevelt (7-7) falls into the consolation bracket and will play Wai'anae (8-6) in an elimination game today.
Pearl City also defeated Roosevelt in last year's quarterfinals, by scoring five runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie. The Chargers then went on to score a combined 23 runs in the semifinal and championship games to capture their first OIA title since 1993.
Yesterday, Pearl City got started early, jumping to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Bryson Nakamura's RBI double and Carlton Tanabe's three-run homer to left-center.
The Chargers made it 5-0 in the fourth on an RBI single by Bully Casarez, then ended the game by scoring five more runs in the fifth, highlighted by Bryson Namba's two-run homer.
"They're a good hitting team, I give them credit," Rough Riders coach Craig Arakawa said. "It wasn't too bad early on (being down 4-0), but they kept chipping away and it's hard to hold them down. They look thicker than last year; they can hit."
Nakamura, a senior left-hander, needed only 42 pitches to complete the three-hitter.
