BEIJING — The United States men's team will face host China in its first game in the Beijing Olympic basketball tournament.

In a draw held Saturday in Beijing, the American men were drawn into Group B with China, defending world champion Spain and Angola. The two other teams to fill out the six-team group will come from an Olympic qualifying tournament in Athens, Greece, July 14-20.

Group A is made up of Lithuania, Russia, defending Olympic champion Argentina, Iran and Australia. The sixth team will come for the Athens tournament.

On the women's side, the defending Olympic champion Americans were drawn in Group B with China, Mali and New Zealand. Two more teams in the group will be decided in a qualifying tournament in June 9-15 in Madrid, Spain. The American women will open against one of the yet-to-be-determined teams.

In Group A, it's Russia, Australia and South Korea. Three more teams will come from the qualifier.

In both the men's and women's tournament, the top four teams in each group advance to the quarterfinals.

FIBA, the world governing body of basketball, also announced two major rules changes which will take effect on Oct. 1, 2010, for major championships.

FIBA has moved the three-point line from 6.25 meters to 6.75. The NBA line is 7.25 meters.

"This was a hot issue within the techincal commission and it narrowly lost in a vote there," Patrick Baumann said, FIBA's general secretary. He said the NBA standard seemed like a big jump for youth players and women.

"We didn't want see two lines, one for youth and women and the other for men and elite players." He said it was likely FIBA would move toward the NBA standard in the next 10 years.

It has also decided to reconfigure the painted three-second area to match the NBA standard, eliminating the trapezoid-shaped area.
