OIA BASEBALL
Kailua, Pearl City gain OIA Red title rematch

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

WAIPI'O — Freshman Ryan McMonigle tossed a four-hitter with seven strikeouts yesterday to help Kailua blitz past 'Aiea, 10-3, in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association baseball semifinals.

The Eastern Division champion Surfriders, ranked No. 4 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 12-2 in league play and will face West champ and No. 3-ranked Pearl City (12-2) at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow for the title at Patsy Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park.

The game, a rematch of last year's championship final won by Pearl City, will be televised live statewide on OC16.

McMonigle, a 5-foot-10, 145-pound right-hander, and the Surfriders were down 2-1 in the second but got big support with Kale Sumner's three-run homer over the left field fence in the second inning, followed by a six-run third.

That was more than enough, as McMonigle shut out Na Ali'i over the next three innings until Kanekoa Asing's home run to lead off the top of the seventh. McMonigle then retired the side in order to complete the game.

"I was a little bit (nervous) in the first couple innings, but then we had a couple good innings (offensively) and I felt better after that," McMonigle said. "It was a confidence booster, knowing I had my defense and my offense behind me."

Kailua took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Sumner walked, advanced to second on Scott Talaesea's infield single, took third on an error and scored on Rob DeMarsh's sacrifice fly to left.

'Aiea came back and took a 2-1 lead in the second after Randy Castillo's two-run triple to left field.

But the Surfriders answered in the bottom of the second with Sumner's three-run blast, then exploded with six runs on five hits and an error in the third. Elia Lono brought in the first two runs with a single to left with the bases loaded, Jared Iha followed with a run-scoring single to left and Ryan Kinoshita added an RBI single to center.

Talaesea then capped the rally with a two-run double to right.

"They all can hit," Na Ali'i coach Ryan Kato said.

Meanwhile, McMonigle pitched shutout ball in innings 3 through 6, allowing only a walk in the fourth and a single in the sixth — both with two outs.

"He has ice in his veins," Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said. "He showed that to us all summer and during the JV season."

Meanwhile, the only hits Yuh allowed were a single by Kainoa Tom leading off the game and a single to left by Kaliko Cayetano Tamashiro leading off the fourth. The only Knights runners to reach second were Pulama Silva (walk) in the second and Cayetano Tamashiro (error) in the seventh.

"Everything was working — fastball, change, curve, slider," Yuh said. "I just tried to throw strikes and go after the hitters."
