UH tennis in WAC title match

On the brink of elimination, the University of Hawai'i men's tennis team rallied to stun top-seeded Boise State, 4-3, yesterday in the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference Championships at Las Cruces, N.M.

The Rainbow Warriors, who lost in the semifinal round the last two seasons, will seek their first WAC title and a bid to the NCAA Tournament when they meet Fresno State in today's final. The 49th-ranked Bulldogs advanced with a 4-0 win over New Mexico State.

Boise State, ranked No. 32, won the doubles point and two singles matches to take a 3-0 lead over the No. 92 'Bows.

Hawai'i's Sascha Heinemann upset 77th-ranked Clancy Shields, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, at No. 2 singles, and teammates Andreas Weber and Spence Mendoza won at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively, to tie the match 3-3.

Jeff Fitch then beat Eric Roberson, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, on the No. 6 court to give UH the victory.


WATER POLO

UCLA BEATS UH

Courtney Mathewson scored four goals as top-seeded UCLA rallied past fifth-seeded Hawai'i, 8-6, yesterday in a semifinal match of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships at the Aztec Aquaplex in San Diego.

Kelly Mason and Angela Turnbull, who each finished with two goals, scored in the first period to give the Rainbow Wahine (20-9) a 2-0 lead.

UH will play Stanford today in the third-place match. In the final, UCLA plays USC, which beat Stanford, 5-4, in the other semifinal.
