A 20-year-old soldier stationed at Schofield Barracks was charged today with abuse of a family member and third-degree criminal property damage.

Patrick Hines is accused of choking his former girlfriend, 27, until she was unconscious on April 21 and with ransacking the woman's Pa'ala'a Road residence in Hale'iwa on Friday.

Hines is being held in lieu of $2,000 bail pending his initial appearance tomorrow at District Court.
