Hawaii junior tennis players fall

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu's Jared Spiker squandered leads in the first and third sets before falling to No. 8 seed Alex Golding of Great Britain, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, yesterday in the round of 32 of the Hawai'i International Tennis Federation Junior Tournament at the Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park Tennis Complex.

Spiker, who is ranked No. 18 in Boys 16 of the Hawai'i Pacific Section, led 4-2 in the third set when Golding took a medical timeout because of cramps. Spiker lost his rhythm and momentum during the break.

"I started making errors — mental mistakes — and it let him back into the match," Spiker said.

Two other Hawai'i players also lost in three sets. No. 9 seed Leonidas Christofides of Nicosia, Cyprus beat Matthew Westmoreland of Pearl City, 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-0, and David Watson of Great Britain outlasted Fernando Aguirregomezcorta of Hilo, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, in a match that took three hours.

Also, Daniel McCall of Northern California defeated No. 16 Joseph Kasnetz of Honolulu, 7-6 (2), 6-1. Kasnetz was Hawai'i's only seeded player.

On the girls side, three Hawai'i players lost in straight sets in the round of 16. No. 4 seed Charlotte Calhoun of Dallas defeated Kelly Domingo of Honolulu, 6-3, 6-0; No. 7 seed Bryn Boren of Laguna Niguel, Calif. defeated Kelsey Daguio of Waipahu, 6-0, 6-1, and No. 2 seed Ester Godfield from Brooklyn, N.Y. beat Sayo Tsukamoto of Kailua, Kona, 6-0, 6-0.

Competition continues today at 9 a.m.
