Aloha Tower Marketplace has partnered with the Hawaii Fashion Incubator to offer a series of free fashion events called First Fashion Friday. Today and on the first Friday of September and October, the Marketplace will showcase fashions, sales, style solution workshops and more, including a 6 p.m. fashion preview at the center atrium today. There will be free goodie bags from CMC Medi-Spa and prize giveaways; 566-2337 or www.alohatower.com.
KIMONO CULTURE
Honolulu residents will have a rare opportunity to learn about kimono culture in a special presentation of historical and modern costumes from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Manoa Grand Ballroom at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i, 2454 S. Beretania St. in Mo'ili'ili. The program is free and open to the public.
The Hakubi Kyoto Kimono School will offer three rare presentations, seldom seen outside Japan:
TAKE IT TO THE STREETS
Just in time for back-to-school shopping, Macy's Pearlridge is having a streetwear fashion event, beginning at 3 p.m. tomorrow in the store's ThisIt department. There will be a fashion show featuring the latest looks from Roca Wear, BabyPhat, Dereon, Apple Bottoms and others. In addition, there will be a live DJ, a beauty bar and tasty treats.
Shoppers will have a chance to enter to win prizes and gifts with purchase from the featured designers. The event is free and open to the public. Information: www.macys.com or call 945-5894.
DIVAS DOING GOOD
Fashion will be at the forefront as The Wedding Cafe launches Divas Doing Good, a community base of fashion-forward, eco-conscious women, on a broader scale and takes it out of the confines of the cafe's Ward Warehouse store. An event being slated as "Green is the New Black" will be held at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 12 at Waterfront at Aloha Tower.
The fashion show will feature Jessica's Traveling Boutique, Split Obsession, Allison Izu, Alliway and Fashionista's Market.
There will be fashion, food, a silent auction and prize drawings, as well as entertainment by Ben Vegas and Maila Gibson.
The event benefits Kanu Hawai'i, a nonprofit committed to making Hawai'i a better place for future generations. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased in advance at The Wedding Cafe locations at Ward Warehouse and Manoa Marketplace, or $30 at the door; 591-1005 or love@theweddingcafe.net.
VALERIE JOSEPH MOVES
The Valerie Joseph Boutique has closed its McCully and Ward locations to reach for a broader audience at Ala Moana Center. The new store opens today on the mall's bottom level next to Barnes & Noble, offering a mix of dresses, separates, lingerie, handbags, hats, jewelry and Body & Soul cosmetics. The slogan remains the same: "Life is short, buy cute clothes."
