The University of Hawai'i Board of Regents yesterday approved a 5.5 percent pay increase for system president David McClain, bringing his total annual salary to $414,096.

The regents also approved a 3.7 percent pay increase for University of Hawai'i-Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw, making her annual salary $363,024.

The salary increases were based on annual performance reviews conducted of the various higher education officials.

Regents met yesterday in a closed-door executive session during their monthly meeting at Leeward Community College to discuss the salary adjustments of various administrators.

Regents voted 10-0 to approve the proposed salary increases.

Various other chancellors in the 10-campus university system also received raises:

  • Rose Tseng, the UH-Hilo chancellor, received a 6 percent pay increase, making her annual salary $305,280.

  • Gene Awakuni, the chancellor of UH-West O'ahu, received a 6.9 percent increase, making his salary $222,576.

  • Michael Rota, the chancellor of Honolulu Community College, received a 5.6 percent pay increase, making his salary $177,600.

  • Rockne Freitas, Hawai'i Community College chancellor, received a 7.7 percent increase, making his annual salary $176,832.

UH administrators receive job reviews annually and their raises are tied to their reviews. Officials were given a $6,000 increase for ratings of fully satisfactory, superior or outstanding. Those rated as superior received an additional 2 percent increase; those rated as outstanding received an additional 4 percent.

Earlier this month, the regents completed an annual review of McClain's job performance and ranked it as "outstanding," the highest category in the university's evaluation system.
