Xeriscape is call of the day
| |||
Yes, it's possible to have a green thumb without worrying about wasting water on landscaping.
One answer is xeriscaping, which can actually help conserve water — up to 30 percent to 80 percent of water consumption for a single family home, according to the Board of Water Supply, which is hosting an open house and plant sale today at the Halawa Xeriscape Garden.
To celebrate the garden's 20th anniversary, one attendee will win an "Extreme Xeriscape Garden Makeover," valued at more than $20,000.
In addition to an "unthirsty" plant sale, the open house includes family-friendly (and free) activities, including workshops and classes by landscaping experts, narrated tours of the garden, keiki activities and free mulch giveaway.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., but Halawa Xeriscape Garden members can get in from 8:30 a.m.
