UH diver Friesen honored as WAC's best

University of Hawai'i diver Emma Friesen has been honored with the Joe Kearney Award from the Western Athletic Conference.
The award is given annually to the top male and female WAC athletes. Fresno State baseball player Steve Susdorf was selected as the male winner by WAC athletics directors. Friesen was chosen by WAC senior woman administrators.
Friesen, of North Vancouver, British Columbia, became the second diver in UH history to win a national championship in March. Friesen won the 1-meter event at the NCAA Championships en route to All-American honors and being named NCAA Tri-Diver of the Year.
Friesen is the first diver to win the award since it began in 1991-92 and the fifth Rainbow Wahine to win the award in the past six years.
Friesen, who will be a junior, also finished sixth at the NCAA Championships on the 3-meter and defended her WAC 1-meter title. She also set a score record of 336.20 on the 1-meter at the NCAA Championships.
Previous UH winners were Colt Brennan (2006-07, football), Kanoe Kamana'o (2005-06 and 2006-07, women's volleyball) and Kim Willoughby (2002-03, women's volleyball and basketball and 2003-04, women's volleyball).

HAWAI'I TRIO PLACES THIRD IN NATIONAL U-19
Hawai'i players Kody Adams, Josiah Motosue and Colin Lund helped the Colorado Rush Nike to a third-place finish out of four teams in the under-19 boys division of the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships, July 22 to 27 in North Little Rock, Ark.
The Rush finished the tournament 1-2, and Lund scored a goal in the 60th minute in the third-place game, a 3-0 win over Freestate United of Maryland.
The Rush lost to Arizona's Sereno 89 White on penalty kicks in the championship game of the Far West Regionals held in Hawai'i in June, but it was ruled later that Sereno was disqualified.
BASEBALL
PUNAHOU GRADUATE DOWNING NAMED MVP
Punahou School graduate Kaohi Downing was named the Most Valuable Player of the fourth Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League season, the league announced on its Web site.
Downing, who will be a senior outfielder at NAIA Point Loma Nazarene, performed well at the plate and as a pitcher. He batted .375 with 11 doubles, four triples and a home run with 34 RBI and 17 steals (in 21 attempts) for the league champion Kauai Menehunes. He also was used as a closer, finishing 1-0 with one save. His coach, Steve Gewecke, said on the Web site that Downing "could throw 91-93 mph."
Hawai'i Kai resident Steve Bralver, who will be a senior first baseman at Division III Emory University in Atlanta, was crowned batting champion with his .396 average for the Hawaii Aliis. Bralver, who played one season at Hawai'i, had 12 doubles, two triples and three home runs with 31 RBI. It was his second season in HCBL.
Waikiki Surfers right-hander Scott Holstein, who will be a senior at McNeese State, was named the Top Pitcher. He was 5-0 with a 1.27 earned run average, striking out 40 and walking 14 in 42 innings.
The champion Menehunes were coached by Gewecke and Shannon Hirai, who also coaches Kalani High's varsity baseball team.
LITTLE LEAGUE
WAIPI'O TRIUMPHS, 2-1, DESPITE BEING NO-HIT
Waipi'o was no-hit yesterday against Pleasanton, Calif., but won by scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 2-1 win on the first day of the Little League Majors (ages 11-12) Western Regional at San Bernadino, Calif.
Caleb Duhay and Iolana Akau scored for Waipi'o in the sixth.
Waipi'o's Khade Paris and Tanner Tokunaga combined on a one-hitter. Paris worked the first four innings with nine strikeouts and Tokunaga worked the final two for the victory.
Waipi'o will play Glendale, Ariz, tomorrow at 5 p.m. Hawai'i time.

O'AHU KAMIKAZE TOPS BEAVER, UTAH, 14-2
Geoffrey Moore and Matt Dunaway drove in two runs apiece, and Korrey Siracusa, Dunaway and Blaine DeMello combined on a four-hitter as the O'ahu Kamikaze beat Beaver, Utah, 14-2, at the Cal Ripken (ages 9-under) Western Regional yesterday at Panguitch, Utah.
The Kamikaze scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-2 lead.
O'ahu (2-1) will play Arizona today at 1:30 p.m. Hawai'i time.

HAWAI'I ADVANCES TO FINAL AT EL SEGUNDO, 12-2
Sumi Pruett fired a two-hitter with two strikeouts as Hawai'i beat Yuma, Ariz., 12-2, in the Babe Ruth (ages 13-15) Pacific Southwest Regional yesterday at El Segundo, Calif.
Hawai'i (3-1) eliminated Yuma (3-2) and will play Torrance, Calif., for the regional title today at 8 a.m. Hawai'i time.
Hawai'i needs to beat Torrance (3-0) twice to win the double-elimination tournament.

Landen Moran drove in four runs, and Justice Nakagawa and Randy Romero combined on a four-hitter as Mililani beat North City, Calif., 9-3, in the P.O.N.Y. Mustang (ages 9-10) West Zone Tournament yesterday at Chino Hills, Calif.
Nakagawa allowed three hits and three unearned runs and struck out three batters before yielding to Romero in the sixth inning. Reyn Romero added two RBIs.
Mililani (2-0) will play today at 4 p.m. Hawai'i time.

Jimmy Madrid batted 3 for 3 and drove in three runs, and Cody Academia, DJ Dureg and Ekolu Ramos combined on a two-hitter as Mililani beat Maple Valley, Wash., 11-1, in the P.O.N.Y. Bronco (ages 11-12) West Zone Tournament yesterday at Valencia, Calif.
Academia allowed two hits in the first inning and struck out six over his three innings. The game was shortened to five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Mililani (2-0) awaits the winner of an elimination game between Maple Valley and Hart, Calif., today at 4 p.m. Hawai'i time.

FISHING
CALIFORNIA ANGLER LEADS TEAM TO BILLFISH TITLE
Laguna Niguel Billfish Club No. 2 of California claimed the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament yesterday thanks to a 64-year-old tax accountant.
Robert Dudley was the first angler to land two billfish weighing more than 600 pounds apiece in a single tournament during the five-day event held off the Kona Coast of the Big Island.
On Tuesday, Dudley spent 2 hours, 20 minutes reeling in a 973-pound Pacific blue marlin. He took 80 minutes to land a 693-pounder on Thursday.
The fish were the second and 11th largest caught in the 49-year history of the tournament.
Hilton Grand Vacations Fishing Club-Japan was second and Team Makala of California took third in the field of 26 teams.
During the tournament, 65 Pacific blue marlin were tagged and released, in addition to 15 short nose spearfish. Six marlin were boated, as were two ahi, or tuna.
WATER POLO
HAWAIIAN INVITATIONAL TO RUN AUG. 5 TO 10
The Hawaiian Invitational Water Polo Tournament will run from Tuesday, August 5 through Sunday, August 10.
The tournament, which features teams from around the world, will be at three separate pools around Honolulu — 'Iolani Schools, Kamehameha Schools and Punahou Schools pools — with the championship game taking place on Sunday, August 10 at the University of Hawai'i.
There are seven divisions : 14-under boys, 16-under girls, 16-under boys, 18-under girls, 18-under boys, and open divisions for women and men.
There is no admission charge to the matches.
