Police revise Honolulu traffic fatality count

STATEWIDE FATALITY BREAKDOWN
As of today, 63 people have died in traffic accidents this year in Hawai‘i as compared to 79 by this date in 2007. The updated 2008 island-by-island breakdown as compiled by The Advertiser: O‘AHU (29) — Vehicle (12 deaths/11 crashes), pedestrian (10), motorcycle (4), moped (1), bicycle (2). Last fatal: Aug. 2. This month: 1. Last month: 4. BIG ISLAND (14) — Vehicle (10), motorcycle (3), pedestrian (1). Last fatal: July 6. This month: 0. Last month: 1. MAUI (12) — Vehicle (6, includes one for Moloka‘i), motorcycle (4), pedestrian (2). Last fatal: July 4. This month: 0. Last month: 1. KAUA‘I (8) — Vehicle (7 deaths/6 crashes), pedestrian (1). Last fatal: July 9. This month: 0. Last month: 1.

The Honolulu police vehicular homicide section has reconciled its 2008 traffic fatality count to reflect that Kevin Neeson, 37, died of a medical condition and not a collision on 'A'ala Street on April 14.
The medical examiner's office determined Neeson died of cardiac arrhythmia. Police, however, only recently received the paperwork to make the official change. The current fatality count for O'ahu is 29.
