There will be a Hawai'i presence at the Beijing Olympics this Friday when Kalani grad David Wong, also known as Huang Dawei — formerly of The Krush — performs his 2008 Olympic theme song, "Wishing Star," at the Bird's Nest Olympic Stadium, to launch the 2008 Games. It's one of the originals that made the cut to debut at the Olympics.

On Aug. 19, same place, Huang will perform the rock-opera, "The Dragon Awakes," with co-composers Jon Yen and Keith Stewart, and his 6 Senses Concert Tour will launch with performances Aug. 30 and 31 in Taipei, Taiwan's Convention Centre. The show, with other celebrity artists, will focus on Huang's — or Wong's — hits from his eight solo albums in the Far East.

WHEE, THE PEOPLE: Ballet Hawaii board member and tap teacher Jim Hutchison is back in town following Screen Actors Guild meetings in New York, but not without a big smile on his face. He was en route to see "In the Heights," produced by former Honolulan Kevin McCollum, and decided to stop for a Starbucks in NYC. In front of him in line, he noticed a familiar face. He said, "Shirley?" And the redhead turned and yelled, "Jimmy Hutchison!" It was Shirley MacLaine, headed for "August: Osage County." The two have been pals from way back, when they danced together in "Pajama Game" and were kids on Broadway. ...

And Tony-nominated John Selya from "Movin' Out" is here to teach in Ballet Hawaii's Summer Intensive program, which culminates with "Giselle" Aug. 16 and 17 at Blaisdell Concert Hall. ...

Johnny Imaikalani Pastor, ex-Isle actor now in L.A., saw the current Broadway hit "In the Heights" before its Broadway opening and subsequent Tony Award wins. He met writer and star Lin-Manuel Miranda and several other cast members, and then had a moment he'll never forget: Turns out that Priscilla Lopez and Kelly Bishop, who are in "Heights," were the original Diana Morales and Sheila in "A Chorus Line," and Pastor has performed in that fabled backstage musical, too. The light dawned when he name-dropped — Tommy Aguilar, Cheryl Clark, Timmy Cassidy, all with "Chorus Line" ties — prompting Bishop to bellow to Lopez, "He is one of us, class of '88." Made his day. ...

Actress Aubrey Lee Glover is making the plunge — to New York. She's relocating with her BF on Sept. 15, so she's holding a garage sale Aug. 16 and 17, at 2664 Terrace Drive, if you want to bargain hunt. ...

HERE ' N' THERE: Miss Hawaii Teen USA Emma Wo leaves the Islands this Friday for the Miss Teen USA Pageant in the Bahamas. She is the daughter of Buzz and Kitty Wo and the granddaughter of Maurice and Joanne Sullivan and Robert and Betty Wo. Emma has been prepping the past six months for her big moment. Local pageant honchos Takeo Kobayashi and Eric Chandler say of her, "Emma is the genuine diamond in the crown. Her sweetness and unparalleled beauty make this teen a spectacular example of the best in American youth." ...

More than 3,000 tickets have been sold to the Aug. 30 Earth, Wind & Fire concert at the new Waikoloa Bowl at the Waikoloa Beach Resort, making it one of the fastest-selling shows on the Big Island.

"The numbers have shown that this has been one of the strongest on sale in the 16 years that I have lived on the Island," said Chris Leonard, president and general manager for New West Broadcasting Corp. Seats are still available at 800-888-8499 or www.waikoloanights.com. ...

BRINGING IT HOME: Publicist Lisa Josephsohn is back from a quick trip to Los Angeles — with bad and good news. Her cancer has returned, after a strenuous year of battles and treatments, so she's contemplating her next moves. But while in L.A., she was able to sit in on a rehearsal of the Aug. 8-10 "Les Miserables" concert to be staged at the Hollywood Bowl, since dear producer-director friend (and an ally of the Islands) Richard Jay-Alexander invited her to a practice session at the nearby Methodist Church — providing a few hours of "grace," as she puts it, from the worries of the cancer.

Tony Award-winning actor Brian Stokes Mitchell, who has been a performer in two "Romance Festival" concerts in Honolulu, is portraying Javert in the "Les Miz" special, and it's a new experience for him, doing a villain opposite J. Mark McVey as Jean Valjean, who also was rehearsing. Then Stokes Mitchell rendered "Stars," which, said Josephson, was "chicken skin." She's probably this town's biggest "Les Miz" junkie, having seen some 50 performances here, on Broadway, in Paris, in Australia, in Singapore — and the church sanctuary, with stained glass, arched ceiling and spirit of hope, provided her a surge of strength and energy as she begins yet another journey of chemo treatments. ...
