The Kaua'i Film Commission is pushing Kaua'i as a production destination by capitalizing on the visibility of Ben Stiller's summer flick "Tropic Thunder" and state tax credits for filmmakers.
Beth Tokioka, director of the Kaua'i County's Office of Economic Development, said "Tropic Thunder" infused an estimated $68 million into Kaua'i's economy in 2007. "Film production not only fills hotel rooms, but it also benefits the many small businesses that service the film industry," Tokioka said in a news release today.
As part of its effort to attract filmmakers, the county will be co-sponsoring a film seminar with "A Whale of a Time Productions" Aug. 16 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the ResortQuest Kaua'i Beach at Makaiwa.
Eve Honthaner, a staff production executive with DreamWorks Studios whose film credits include "Tropic Thunder," "Titanic," "Joy Ride" and "Just Married," will be conducting the seminar titled "What They Don't Teach You in Film School." Cost is $50 per person and enrollment is limited to 100.
The seminar is designed for those interested in getting into the film industry or those with some experience in the industry who are looking to advance their career.
"Part of having a strong film industry is having a base of skilled workers to support film production," said Kaua'i Film Commissioner Art Umezu. "We're so grateful for this partnership that will help Kaua'i become even more competitive among the many locations available worldwide."
To register for the seminar or request an auxiliary aid or service, contact Angela Tillson of "A Whale of a Time Productions" at 808-823-0105 or atillson@mac.com.
The deadline to register is Tuesday.
