Boykins signs with Italian hoops team

Unrestricted free agent Earl Boykins signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal yesterday to play with Virtus Bologna of the Italian league, the latest NBA player to sign a deal with an overseas club.
Andy Bountogianis of the Cleveland-based Mark Termini Associates Inc. sports agency, confirmed the signing.
The 32-year-old point guard will be the highest-paid player in Italy for the 2008-09 season.
The 5-foot-5 Boykins, who played at Eastern Michigan, has been in the NBA for 10 years, and averaged 9.4 points. He played for the Charlotte Bobcats last season and has also played for the New Jersey Nets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Clippers, Golden State Warriors, Denver Nuggets and Milwaukee Bucks.
On Monday, Carlos Arroyo, who played for Orlando the past two seasons, announced that he has signed a one-year deal with Maccabi Tel Aviv, an Israeli club. Josh Childress announced last month that he was leaving the Atlanta Hawks for Greek club Olympiakos.
Also last month, Nenad Kerstic left the Nets, and Carlos Delfino and Jorge Garbajosa left the Toronto Raptors to sign with a Russian team.
In June, Juan Carlos Navarro rejoined FC Barcelona after a one-season stint with the Memphis Grizzlies.

REVOLUTION CAPTURE SUPERLIGA CROWN
New England goalkeeper Matt Reis tipped a shot by Corey Ashe off the crossbar in the eighth round of penalty kicks to give the New England Revolution a 3-2 victory over the Houston Dynamo yesterday for the SuperLiga championship.
New England and Houston were tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation and 2-2 at the end of two 15-minute overtime periods at Foxborough, Mass.
In the penalty kick shootout, New England defender Chris Albright converted his chance against Pat Onstad for a 6-5 lead, while the left-footed Ashe then had his potential drive stopped by Reis.
In the first 15-minute overtime, Houston regained the lead when Kei Kamara headed in a cross from the left side from Brian Ching, a Kamehameha Schools alum from Hale'iwa, in the 98th minute.
But, in the 102nd minute, New England's Shalrie Joseph headed in the equalizer for the Revolution.

KONO, KANEKO MAKE MATCH-PLAY IN OREGON
Hawai'i's Stephanie Kono and Ayaka Kaneko made the cut yesterday after two days of stroke-play qualifying at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at Eugene Country Club at Eugene, Ore.
Kono is tied for 19th after shooting a 73—146 yesterday, and Kaneko is tied for 43rd after a 77—150.
Australia's Stephanie Na and Duke standout Amanda Blumenherst shared medalists honors with 4-under 140 totals.
The cut was set at 8-over 152, with 64 players advancing to match play.
Hawai'i's Mari Chun (78—153) and Kimberly Kim (71—153) just missed advancing. Cyd Okino finished tied for 122nd at 77—161.

Croatia's Mario Ancic withdrew from the U.S. Open yesterday with a recurrence of mononucleosis, the second straight year the 25th-ranked player was forced to miss the tournament. Ancic, a former Wimbledon semifinalist, was slowed throughout the 2007 season because of mononucleosis. He pulled out of the Open last August because of an injured right shoulder. ... Former No. 1 Marat Safin continued his slow climb back toward the top of the rankings with a 6-3, 6-4 win over John Isner in the first round of the Countrywide Classic yesterday at Los Angeles. Safin, 28, the No. 5 seed in this 28-player ATP Tour event, started the season with a five-match losing streak and dropped from No. 57 to No. 93.
