Cuba's Yordanis Arencibia of Cuba defeated Wahiawa's Taylor Takata of the United States in the quarterfinals sending the Hawai'i athlete to the repechage of the 66-kilogram (145.5-pound) class of the judo competition at the Olympic Games in Beijing on Sunday.

In Takata's first repechage match, Aheen El Hady of Egypt won by ippon, eliminating the Iolani alum from the competition.

Takata defeated Greece's Tariel Zintiridis in his first match and Dex Elmont of the Netherlands in his second match to advance to the quarterfinals.

The semifinals, repechage finals and gold and bronze medal matches are Sunday night. The highest possible finish for a player in the repechage is a bronze medal.

Takata and Zintriridis were scoreless after the 5-minute time limit and went into a "golden score" period, where the first person to score wins. Takata scored on a yuko (partially successful throw) 29 seconds into the golden score to win.

Takata also won his second match in the golden score period, when Elmont was penalized.

Arencibia won the quarterfinal, outpointing Takata, 10-0.
