Hilo rolls at Junior World Series

Ekolu Martens, Kian Kurokawa and Conner Yoshioka combined on a three-hitter as Hilo routed Canton, Mass., 12-0, in the Little League Juniors (ages 13-14) World Series yesterday at Taylor, Mich.

Martens, who pitched the first three innings, also had a three-run single in the first against Canton, the U.S. East champion.

Koa Matson belted a three-run homer in the fifth inning for Hilo, the U.S. West champion, in the game shortened to five innings because of the mercy-rule game.

Hilo (2-1) will play U.S. Central champion Johnston, Iowa today at 11 a.m. Hawai'i time.

PEARL CITY RAINED OUT

Pearl City's pool-play game against Surrey, British Columbia, Canada in the Little League Seniors (ages 15-6) World Series was postponed by rain yesterday at Bangor, Maine.

Pearl City (1-1) will play two tomorrow after taking today off. It will play Canada at 9 a.m. Hawai'i time and Bangor, Maine, at 11 a.m. MORE BASEBALL

PARADISE EVENT FRIDAY

The fourth annual Baseball in Paradise youth tournament will be held Friday through Sunday.

Friday's and Sunday's games will be held at Les Murakami Stadium with Saturday's at the Patsy Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park.

During the tournament, players will be collecting canned foods for the Food Bank of Hawaii, according to a Baseball In Paradise press release.

Friday's and Saturday's games will feature players ages 15 to 18, while Sunday's first game involves players seven years old.

There is no admission charge for the games.

Friday at UH—Sting Rays vs. DH, noon; Stars vs. Kaneohe, 2:30 p.m.; Mililani vs. Moanalua, 5 p.m.

TENNIS

HPU RECEIVES HONORS

Hawai'i Pacific University's women's and men's tennis teams earned All-Academic team and individual honors awarded by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

For consideration for the NCAA Division II award, teams must have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 for the 2007-08 academic year. Individuals were considered for the ITA All-Academic Team by earning at least a 3.5 GPA for the 2007-08 academic year.

The men's team was ranked fourth overall, with the women's team at No. 19. On the men's side, both Hendrik Bode (Lehrte, Germany) and Mark Mestan (Cologne, Germany) earned recognition for the Sea Warriors.

For the women, Anastasia Ageychik (Minsk, Belarus), Elena Hudzikova (Bratislava, Slovakia), and Samantha Mathews (Hono-lulu) earned the honor for HPU.


GOLF

CARLL, HAYASHI IN FINAL

Kevin Carll and Kevin Hayashi advanced to the finals of the Aloha Section PGA Turtle Bay Golf Match Play Championship yesterday at the Arnold Palmer Course.

In the semifinals, Carll beat Ron Castillo and Hayashi defeated John Hearn in the Championship flight. Both won 1-up.

The quarterfinals also were held yesterday with Carll knocking off defending champion John Lynch, 6-5.

In the senior finals, Lance Taketa beat Bill Hunt, 3-1.
