Ex-UH stars help U.S. women fend off Poland

BEIJING — Logan Tom had a team-high 25 points as the United States women's volleyball team went five games before dispatching Poland last night in a preliminary volleyball match at the Capital Gymnasium.
The scores were 18-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 15-13.
Heather Bown, a former University of Hawai'i standout, had 11 points for the U.S. team, including 10 kills. Kim Willoughby, another ex-UH star, added nine points. Willoughby had two aces for the U.S. as well.
Setters Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, another former UH star, and Punahou School alum Lindsey Berg also saw action for the United States.
The Americans completed preliminary play with a 4-1 record, while Poland dipped to 1-4. The United States will next play in the quarterfinals against an opponent to be determined.
SOFTBALL
BEIJING — Justine Smethurst, a former University of Hawai'i pitcher, gave up one hit in seven innings and got the win as Australia beat the Netherlands, 8-0, yesterday in a women's preliminary softball game at Fengtai Softball Field.
Stacy Porter, another former UH standout, was 1 for 3 and scored a run.
Australia improved to 3-2 in the tournament, while the Netherlands dropped to 0-5.
