Landon re-elected UH Board of Regents chairman

KANE'OHE — Allan R. Landon, chairman and chief executive officer of Bank of Hawaii, was re-elected Friday to a one-year term as chairman of the University of Hawai'i Board of Regents.

Howard H. Karr was elected as vice chair at the board's monthly meeting held at Windward Community College.

Landon joined the Board of Regents in 2005. He occupies a Honolulu County seat on the board. He received his bachelor's degree from Iowa State University and also attended executive programs at Duke and Northwestern universities.

An accountant by education, he was a partner with Ernst and Young LLP before a career change brought him to Bank of Hawaii.

Landon serves as chairman of the board for Hawai'i Medical Service Association. He is also on the board of directors of The Research Corporation of the University of Hawai'i, Catholic Charities of Hawai'i, Public Schools of Hawai'i Foundation and Hawai'i Business Roundtable, and he is a member of the Military Affairs Council of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawai'i. He previously served as a director and treasurer of the University of Hawai'i Foundation and as a board member of the Hawai'i Council for the Humanities.

A retired Hawai'i bank executive, Karr joined the Board of Regents in 2008 representing Honolulu County. He concluded his 29 years with First Hawaiian Bank as executive vice president and chief financial officer of BancWest Corp. and vice chairman of the administration and finance group of First Hawaiian Bank.

He previously served as an accountant and audit manager with Coopers and Lybrand and spent eight years in the U.S. Army Reserve with the 100th Battalion, 442nd Regiment Reserve. Involved with numerous community, nonprofit and professional organizations over the past two decades, Karr serves on boards or committees for Aloha United Way, the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Foundation, Hawai'i Medical Service Association, Japan-America Society of Hawai'i, Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific, Special Olympics of Hawai'i and Waialae Country Club. A member of the University of Hawai'i Foundation Board of Trustees, he has served three terms as chair and sits on the Centennial Campaign Cabinet with his wife Audrey.

Born in Honolulu, Karr graduated from Roosevelt High School and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa with a major in accounting and minor in economics. He is a UH Distinguished Alumni Award recipient and was inducted into Manoa's Shidler College of Business Alumni Hall of Honor. Other honors include the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette from the Government of Japan and Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award.
