Forms accepted for Kona affordable housing project

Advertiser Staff

Housing interest forms are being accepted through Sept. 18 for residents interested in buying or renting a home in Kamakoa at Waikoloa, a new affordable workforce housing project in West Hawai'i.

Initiated by the County of Hawaii, the 125-unit project is being developed by Waikoloa Workforce Housing LLC, a nonprofit organization established by the Hawaii Island Housing Trust for the planning, financing, development and management of the Kamakoa project.

Isemoto Contracting began work on June 13 at the housing site which is located north of and adjacent to Waikoloa Village in South Kohala. Phase 1A of Kamakoa is expected to include a mix of single-family homes, townhouses and bungalows and a community center. Models of the homes are expected to be ready in early 2009.

About two-thirds of the units will be for sale at prices affordable to people earning up to 140 percent of the Big Island median income. The remainder of the units will be for rent.

The housing interest forms will be used to develop a priority list for eligible residents. Forms are available online at www.Kamakoa.com, or at the Waikoloa Workforce Housing office in Hilo, 56 Kamehameha Ave. For more information, call 808-935-7755.
