A whirlwind week of travel started and ended in triumph for Keanu Asing.

One week after winning a contest in Bali, Indonesia, Asing won two divisions at the Surfing America USA Championships on Sunday at Huntington Beach, Calif.

Led by Asing, Hawai'i surfers combined to win five of the eight youth divisions at the USA Championships. The contest is considered one of the top events in the country for amateur surfers.

"It wasn't the best conditions," said Asing, 15. "It was small and windy. The waves were all over the place. I just did my best and tried to be selective and it worked out."

Asing beat the surfers in his age group to win the Boys Under 16 division. He then "surfed up" and beat the older competitors to win the Boys Under 18 division.

Heats were run for four consecutive days, and Asing had to surf in four heats Sunday — the semifinals and finals for both the Boys Under 16 and Boys Under 18 divisions.

"I was really tired, but just had to handle it and work things out," he said.

Asing won the Billabong Pro Junior Canggu contest in Bali on Aug. 17. After a day-long flight back to O'ahu, he placed third in the Macy's E-Series Junior Pro at Kuhio Beach, Waikiki, on Aug. 18.

Shortly after the Waikiki contest, he was on a flight to California for the USA Championships.

"I want to build up more confidence in my surfing, so it was cool to do all these contests," Asing said.

Asing is a sophomore in a home school program, and said he will spend the next few weeks catching up on school work.

Other division winners from Hawai'i at the USA Championships were Nage Melamed of Kaua'i in the Girls Under 16 division, Ian Gentil of Maui in the Boys Under 12 division, and Tatiana Weston-Webb of Kaua'i in the Girls Under 12 division.

Earlier in the week, Mia Melamed — Nage's older sister — won the Open Women division during the adult phase of the competition.

The contest also served as a qualifier for the USA Surf Team that will compete in the 2009 World Junior Championships.

Hawai'i surfers accepting invitations to compete for the USA team were Nage Melamed, Lani Doherty of Maui, and Nathan Carvalho of Kaua'i.

Asing declined to surf for the USA team so he could try out for the Hawai'i team.

Because Hawai'i is recognized as its own region by the World Junior Championships, it will have a team separate from the USA. Asing was on the Hawai'i team at last year's contest.

The Hawai'i team is expected to be selected later this year.
