A special Parade of Champions will be held Monday to salute the Waipi'o Little League team, other 2008 national title-holders, and past and present Hawai'i Olympians, the mayor announced today.
The parade will start at 5 p.m. and run down Kalakaua Avenue, from Fort DeRussy to Kapi'olani Park, Mayor Mufi Hannemann said in a news release.
A special Sunset on the Beach event will begin at 6:45 p.m. at Queen's Surf beach, featuring a film and live entertainment. Details on the film and entertainment will be announced when they are available.
Monday's event is in addition to the regularly scheduled Sunset on the Beach set for Saturday and Sunday at the same spot.
"This will be a wonderful celebration and a great opportunity for fans and supporters to see and congratulate Hawai'i's sports heroes and heroines in person," Hannemann said. "We're all tremendously proud of their accomplishments."
The news release said initial confirmed parade participants include the Waipi'o team and manager Timo Donahue, Olympic gold medalist Natasha Kai, the Royal Hawaiian Band, and marching bands from 'Aiea, Castle, Mililani and Waipahu high schools.
The city is contacting parade participants. Present and former Hawai'i Olympians and national title-holders interested in participating may contact the city at mayor@honolulu.gov or call 768-3392.
Businesses and other organizations interested in co-sponsoring the event may call the same number.
Monday is Labor Day, so parking will be difficult in Waikiki. The city encouraged the use of public transportation.
