9/11 remembrance walk to be held Sept. 7 Downtown

Mayor Mufi Hannemann will lead the third annual Remembrance Walk on Sunday, Sept. 7, in observance of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on America.
"This walk is an annual tradition intended to honor those who perished in the 9/11 attacks and to recognize the first-responders and members of the armed forces who protect our safety and well-being," Hannemann said in a news release issued by the city. "The walk is our way of remembering the losses we suffered and the acts of heroism summoned the day of the attacks."
The public is invited to participate in the walk.
Participants are asked to gather at the entrance of the Honolulu Police Department's Alapai Headquarters at 801 South Beretania St. by 6:30 p.m. The walk will be led by a procession of pipe and drum players and includes brief ceremonies and wreath presentations beginning at the Honolulu Police Department. Marchers will then proceed down Alapai to South and Queen streets to the Honolulu Fire Department for a second ceremony.The procession will then move onto Halekauwila and then back up Punchbowl streets to Honolulu Hale for a formal ceremony.
The formal program at Honolulu Hale will take place at the eternal flame on the front lawn. The service will include a wreath-laying and recognition of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department and Department of Emergency Management. There will be music by the Royal Hawaiian Band and a display of emergency vehicles by the police, fire, and emergency services departments.
Participants are encouraged to bring flashlights. Free parking will be available at the Frank F. Fasi Civic Center parking structure. Enter from Alapai or Beretania streets.
