Carleton tops 'Swords in men's basketball

Zach Johnson scored 27 points to lead Carleton (Minn.) College to a 74-69 victory over Chaminade in a men's non-conference basketball game at McCabe Gym last night.

Carleton is 3-0. Chaminade fell to 0-4 in its first game since the Maui Invitational.

Jamar Berry scored a game-high 30 points for the Silverswords. Mohamed Tangara added 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Carleton's Bryan Rosett added 20 points.

Carleton led 36-31 at halftime, but Chaminade was able to rally and take a 40-38 lead. The score was last tied at 50, before a 3-pointer by Rosett gave Carleton the lead for good with 7:47 remaining.

PACWEST HONORS

Hawai'i-Hilo senior forward Jay DeMaestri was named Pacific West Conference men's basketball player of the week yesterday.

DeMaestri, of Mill Valley, Calif., scored 18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in a victory over Oakland City (Ind.) on Nov. 24.

Brigham Young-Hawai'i senior forward Latoya Wily haddouble-doubles in two games to earn the women's basketball player of the week honor.

Wily, of La'ie, had 30 points and 11 rebounds in a loss to Oakland City on Nov. 24, and 27 points and 14 rebounds in a loss to Western Washington on Nov. 28.


GOLF

HUNT, RADKE TAKE LEAD AT EVENT AT HUALALAI

Bill Hunt and Maurice Radke of the Golf Academy of Hawai'i shot a 6-under-par 66 (34-32) for a two-shot lead after the first round of the Aloha Section PGA E-Z-GO/Golf Concepts Head Professional-Assistant Professional Championship at the Hualalai Golf Club on the Big Island.

Three teams were tied for second at 68: Tim Herek and Kalani Kiaaina of Hawai'i Prince Golf Club, Kevin Carll and Tad Fujimaki (34-34) of Turtle Bay Golf, and Mike Jones and John Shaw (35-33) of Kapalua Golf.

Five teams were tied at 69.

The final round in the 36-hole four-ball stroke play event is today.
