Closed roads, flooding reported on Windward side

Advertiser Staff

Impassible roads, flooded drainage ditches and fallen trees are keeping police busy from Waimanalo to Kahuku. Windward police reported using plainclothes officers and civil defense workers to supplement their patrols.

Police reported a blown roof at a construction site on Kailua Beach, but they said it was unclear if the roof was completed when the storm struck. The contractor is at the site and dealing with the problem, police said.

A couple of fallen trees are blocking a bridge next to Pipilani Place in Hau'ula and the highway into Kailua Town at Kapa'a Quarry Road, police said.

The Honolulu Fire Department has closed the road over the Hau'ula bridge and is trying to decide if it is safe for vehicles to pass over it, police said. But all along Kamehameha Highway from Kahuku to Waiahole the highway is closed due to flooding in various areas, including Ka'a'awa, Kahana, Sacred Falls and Hau'ula, police said.

In Kailua, Kapa'a Quarry Road is impassible and the road to Lanikai was finally open at about 9:30 this morning, police said. One lane on Kalaniana'ole Highway at Kapa'a Quarry is closed due to a fallen tree.

Drainage ways are overwhelmed and streams are high due to the rain, police said. Every estuary from Makapu'u to Kahuku is high, police said.
