Propane tank floats through Waianae, sinks at sea

By Will Hoover
Advertiser Staff Writer

A large propane tank that floated on floodwaters and came to a stop on the shoreline near the Wai'anae Boat Harbor ruptured and sank to the ocean floor.

The 4-by-10 tank was on rocks between the Wai'anae Boat Harbor and the lifeguard station on the Nanakuli side of the harbor. The Honolulu Fire Department cordoned off the area.

According to William Aila, the harbor master, authorities were worried that the tank might explode. That danger was averted when it sank.

Meanwhile, parts of Wai'anae streets are flooded and the electricity is out in many places. Street lights are out at the Farrington Highway and Lualualei Homestead Road intersection. Most shops are closed because they have no electricity.

When street lights are out, drivers should treat the intersection as if it were a four-way stop.
