An unidentified male died yesterday after his north-bound car slammed into a concrete pillar supporting a Ka'anapali golf cart crossing bridge over Honoapi'ilani Highway.

The crash occurred at 12:26 a.m. on the right shoulder of the highway, just south of Halelo Street, police said.

The sedan burst into flames and the driver was burned. Police said medical records would have to be used to make an identification.

There have been 22 traffic fatalities in Maui County so far this year, compared with 20 a year ago.
