GOING VEGAS
Mirage volcano ready to dazzle

By Anthony Curtis

More than three years after it was announced, the Mirage's new and improved volcano has made its debut. Enhanced sound, lighting and special effects — including higher-reaching jets of volcanic spume and dozens of tongues of fire sprouting from the lagoon — bring Las Vegas' original free spectacle up to par with the likes of the later- arriving Bellagio fountains and the Fremont Street Experience. The entire spectacle is set to percussive music by Mickey Hart, former drummer for the Grateful Dead. The volcano had been dormant since shutting down last February. It erupts on the hour, from dusk till 11 p.m., weather permitting.

LEGENDS MOVING: After a 25-year run at the Imperial Palace, Legends in Concert will move to the Harrah's showroom for nightly performances beginning tomorrow. The longest-running celebrity tribute show in the world will be transformed into a holiday celebration, with specially produced musical arrangements and multimedia presentations Dec. 15-30, then resume its standard format.

VIVA McDONALD'S: A new flagship McDonald's has opened next to Circus Circus, by the existing McDonald's, which is closing after 25 years. The new McDonald's is the largest in Nevada and features Vegas sizzle in the form of a 14-screen video ring and flashing marquee.

SUNSET SANTAS: Add Sunset Station to this year's list of casinos with cocktail waitresses donning Santa-style uniforms. Hard Rock and Palms are the others we've seen so far.

Q. Are rooms still available for New Year's Eve?

A. It's not too late to book a room, but locking one in as soon as possible is recommended.
