Roderick Flemings' record-tying performance last week was rewarded yesterday when he was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

It is the first time in more than a year that a Rainbow Warrior received the award.

Flemings, a 6-foot-7 junior guard/forward, averaged 25.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in two games last week. He also made 22 of 34 field goals for a .647 percentage.

Flemings scored 37 points in Hawai'i's 75-55 victory over Eastern Washington, tying the record for most points scored by a Hawai'i player in the 15-year history of the Stan Sheriff Center.

Earlier in the week, he recorded a double-double (14 points and 12 rebounds) in a loss at Illinois.

The last Hawai'i player to win the WAC Player of the Week award was Matt Lojeski on March 4, 2007.

MEN'S TOP 25

Cleveland State 72, Syracuse 69: Cleveland State coach Gary Waters figured his team was headed for overtime. Cedric Jackson thought otherwise.

The senior guard took an inbounds pass from J'Nathan Bullock with 2.2 seconds left, turned and swished a two-handed, 60-foot shot at the buzzer to give the visiting Vikings a shocking victory over No. 11 Syracuse last night.

"I looked up to see if there was a chance but knew there wasn't enough time," Jackson said. "It was a prayer. It's not an everyday shot."

Certainly not for Waters.

"I have never been a part of one of those types of shots, I had my head down," said Waters, in his third year at Cleveland State. "I told my coaches we were headed for overtime. I didn't expect that to happen. Nobody in the house expected that to happen."

Syracuse (9-1) tied this one in the closing seconds on a rebound dunk by Arinze Onuaku.

"It tears your heart out when you see the ball up in the air and you know it's good," said Syracuse's Andy Rautins, whose missed 3-pointer for the win was rebounded by Onuaku. "I kind of stopped looking at it because I knew it had a pretty good chance. Then I heard the crowd and I knew the game was over."

Bullock led Cleveland State (7-4) with 18 points, all in the second half.

No. 2 Connecticut 91, Stony Brook 57: Jeff Adrien had 18 points and 10 rebounds as host Connecticut (9-0) routed Stony Brook (5-5).

It was the 36th career double-double for the senior forward.

WAC MEN

McNeese State 71, Louisiana Tech 44: Kelon Penn scored 11 points and Stephan Martin added 10 as host McNeese State (5-3) defeated Louisiana Tech (5-5).

Kyle Gibson paced the Bulldogs with 19 points and Jamel Guyton added 17.

LOCAL NCAA DII MEN

Hawai'i-Hilo 93, Dominican (N.Y.) 74: Jay DeMaestri had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and John Smith added 20 points as the Vulcans (4-1) beat the Chargers (4-5).

Brandon Price had nine points and 15 rebounds, Charlando Brown added 11 points, and Jacob Briggs had 10 points for Hilo, which was 33 of 64 from the field and held a 52-25 advantage on the board.

Wayne Cottle scored 15 points to lead Dominican.

WOMEN'S TOP 25

No. 2 North Carolina 105, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 49: Cetera DeGraffenreid scored 19 points as host North Carolina (11-0) beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-6).

She'la White had 17 points and Chay Shegog added 15 — both career highs — for the Tar Heels, while Jessica Breland added 10.

No. 18 Ohio State 86, Cleveland State 54: Jantel Lavender had 18 points, and Ashlee Trebilcock and Brittany Johnson added 12 each to lead host Ohio State (8-2) past Cleveland State (4-5).

Lavender also added a game-high 11 rebounds for her 10th double-double in as many games this season.

LOCAL NCAA DII WOMEN

Montana State-Billings 86, Hawai'i Pacific 71: Alira Carpenter scored 26 points and Jen Smith added 19 as the Yellowjackets (4-2) beat the Sea Warriors (1-4) at Neal Blaisdell Arena.

Paris Gravely scored 17 points and Mana Hopkins added 15 for Hawai'i Pacific.
