LIHUE, Kauai — Kauai Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho spent a portion of the day yesterday visiting flooded and flood-damaged properties on the island's west side.

Kaua'i Civil Defense Agency officials have received nearly 40 calls from residents reporting damage to homes and businesses

from the heavy rains that occurred over the weekend.

The reported damage includes vehicles, home appliances, tractors and lawn equipment, roof damage, beds and personal items, tools, waterlines, yard damage and downed trees.

Roughly half of the reports included damage estimates. There was one large claim of $1.25 million, and the remainder totaled around $550,000.

Nearly half of the callers did not provide damage estimates, officials said.

Meanwhile, county agencies continued to assess damage to public property which, other than some road damage, appeared to be minimal.

The Kaua'i County Code, Section 5A-4.2 may provide some relief to property owners who suffered damages via a partial property tax credit. Director of Finance, Wally Rezentes, Jr., is studying the code to determine if and how the provision may be applied.
