Pros, amateurs battle in Burns Golf Cup

The Governor John A. Burns Golf Challenge Cup, which sends 12 of Hawai'i's top golf professionals against 12 top local amateurs, will be played Monday and Tuesday at the Turtle Bay Resort.

Teams are chosen based on performances in designated tournaments throughout the year. The first day's format includes two 18-hole team matches, a four-ball match (best ball), and a foursome match (scotch). Individual matches make up the final day's format.

The professional team includes 2008 Mid-Pacific Open champion Tadd Fujikawa, Section Professional champion Ron Castillo Jr., and Senior Player of the Year Lance Taketa. Top amateurs include Barbers Point Invitational champion Lorens Chan and Manoa Cup, Hickam, OCC and Army Invitational champion Alex Ching.

Last year, the amateur team won for the 11th time, 13.5-10.5. This is the 36th year of the event.

The rosters:

Professionals: Kevin Carll, Ron Castillo Jr., Andrew Feldmann, Tadd Fujikawa, David Gerken, John Hearn, Kalani Kiaaina, Regan Lee, Matt Pakkala, Joe Phengsavath, Lance Taketa and Beau Yokomoto.

Amateurs: Lorens Chan, Alex Ching, Bradley Shigezawa, Brandan Kop, T.J. Kua, Travis Toyama, Alex Chu, Chris Igawa, David Fink, Jonathan Ota, Neal Takara, Max Bonk.


SAILING

EX-'BOW NOMINATED

Molly O'Bryan Vandemoer, a 2003 University of Hawai'i graduate, is one of five athletes nominated for U.S. Sailing's 2008 Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year Award. It is considered the top honor in American sailing along with Yachtsman of the Year.

O'Bryan, an All-American for the Rainbows who now lives in San Diego, is the U.S. Women's Match Racing Champion.

The awards are widely regarded as the "sport's ultimate recognition of an individual's on-the-water achievements for the calendar year."

Winners will be announced next month and honored on Feb. 27 at the New York Yacht Club.
