Punahou wrestlers sweep crowns

WAHIAWA — The Punahou boys and girls wrestling teams wrapped up a sweep at the Hawai'i Wrestling Officials Association Scholarship Tournament yesterday at Leilehua High School.

The two-day preseason tournament — widely regarded as the best preview of February's state tournament — featured 295 boys in 14 weight classes and 125 girls in 11 weight classes.

"It's still early in the season, but it was the first opportunity for our boys to compete, so it was nice to have a chance to see what's working and what we need to improve," Punahou coach Matt Oney said. "I liked the effort, but our execution was still kind of shady."

The two-time defending state champion Buffanblu boys collected 263.5 points to run away from runner-up Kaiser, which had 184 points. 'Iolani (136.5), Pac-Five (110) and Lahainaluna (108) rounded out the top five.

Punahou got first-place finishes from Reid Oshiro (125 pounds), Maika Nagata (130), Angus Galen McCleary (140), Patrick Sheehan (171) and Sani Fuimaono (285).

Oshiro, the defending state champion in the 125-pound division, defeated teammate Alex Wachi in his championship match. After a scoreless first period, Oshiro went ahead 3-0 on a near-fall. He extended his lead in the third period on a takedown that made it 5-2 and went on to win, 7-3.

The Punahou boys collected 16 medals, including another five third-place finishes.

In another boys' match of interest, Kaiser's Byron Apo held off Mililani's Chad Diamond in a match of state runner-ups from last season.

Apo finished second at 130 pounds to Lahainaluna's Travis Okano, while Diamond lost in the 135-pound final to Waiakea's Ryan Higa.

Having already met three times this preseason, the pair faced off last night for the 135-pound title.

Apo took a quick 4-0 lead on a takedown and near-fall and never let up. He led 6-3 after the first period and 10-7 after the second. Apo sealed the win with a pair of third-period reversals to win 15-10.

"It was a big accomplishment. This was one of the goals that I set: To win the Officials' Tournament," said Apo, who had lost all three previous meetings this season, including the final of last week's Maui Invitational. "I've just been working hard, kept training ... I really wanted to beat him."

The Punahou girls got first-place finishes from Melinda Chow (114 pounds), Jenny Ojerio (140) and Ilima-Lei Macfarlane (155).

For Macfarlane the win was especially satisfying. The senior finished second at the last two state tournaments.

"I've finished second the past two years at Officials, ILH and states, so yeah, it's nice to win," said Macfarlane, who pinned Pac-Five's Melody Aoki in the final.

In other girls' matches of interest, 'Aiea's Joy Yamashita barely edged defending state champion Christina Chow, of Punahou, 5-4, in the 120-pound title match.

Also, Radford's Brayanne Moe avenged a loss to 'Iolani's Olivia Fatongia in last year's 220-pound state championship final. Moe, a sophomore, broke a 4-all tie with a takedown with seven seconds left to win it, 6-4.
