Rainbow Classic: UH sinks Waves

The University of Hawaii men's basketball team won the consolation championship of the 45th Annual Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic with a 78-70 victory over Pepperdine today at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Lasha Parghalava scored a career-high 25 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the Rainbow Warriors.
Hawaii went 2-1 and finished in fifth place in the eight-team tournament. The 'Bows are 8-4 overall.
Pepperdine dropped to 2-13.
Bill Amis added 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting, and grabbed five rebounds for Hawaii . Petras Balocka contributed 11 points and seven rebounds.
Parghalava, a 6-foot-2 junior, came in off the bench to spark Hawaii in both halves. He scored 11 points in the first and 14 in the second half.
Pepperdine went on a 10-0 run early in the game to take a 14-7 lead with 14:04 remaining.
The 'Bows rallied behind Parghalava, who scored eight consecutive points during one stretch to give the 'Bows a 29-27 lead.
The game stayed close after that, with the Waves taking a 39-38 lead at intermission after Dane Suttle Jr. made two free throws with 1.4 seconds remaining in the half.
Hawaii went on an 11-3 run midway through the second half to take a 60-51 lead with 5:36 remaining. Parghalava highlighted the surge by banking in a 3-pointer.
The 'Bows increased the lead to as many as 15, then sealed the win by going 8 for 10 on free throws in the final 2:14.
Roderick Flemings, Hawaii's leading scorer entering the game, finished with season-lows of three points and two rebounds.
Lorne Jackson led the Waves with 18 points.
The 'Bows are scheduled to open the Western Athletic Conference season on Saturday, when they host Boise State at the Sheriff Center.
