Hikers hunker down for the night on Koolaus

Advertiser Staff

Three hikers are spending the night in the Ko'olau Range tonight after becoming disoriented and unable to make their way out.

The Honolulu Fire Department will send up a rescue helicopter crew at first light Wednesday, said Capt. Terry Seelig, HFD spokesman.

The hikers, two women and a man in their 20s, set off on a hike above Tripler Army Medical Center with a plan to hike the Tripler Ridge Trail, cross the mountain and descend down the Ha'iku Stairs, Seelig said.

No one is injured, he said.

"They got disoriented because of the weather," Seelig said. "It clouded over. It's not a good day for that type of hike."

The fire department was in cell phone contact with the hikers and advised them to spend the night and wait until conditions are safer, he said.

"It's too dangerous for us to fly the helicopter because of the clouds and wind conditions," Seelig said, adding that the department felt comfortable making the request because no one was injured.

"We're just having them stay in place until tomorrow and if they follow that advice, they'll be fine," Seelig said.

The department received the call for help about 6:15 p.m. and were able to help settle the hikers for the night about 8:30 p.m., he said.
