WAIPAHU — A dominant offensive attack produced only one goal for the Pearl City girls soccer team last night, but that was enough to propel the Chargers to a 1-0 victory over Moanalua in the quarterfinals of the JN Automotive State Division I Championships.

Pearl City, the No. 2 seed and O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion, improved to 15-0-1 in the regular and postseason and will play Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up Punahou (11-1-2) in tonight's semifinals at 6 o'clock at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

OIA runner-up Mililani (13-4) will face No. 1 seed and ILH champ Kamehameha (11-2) in the other semifinal at 8.

Moanalua fell to 11-6-1 and into the consolation bracket.

Chloe Maeshiro's shot from the top of the penalty box on an assist from Meghan Fuller in the 49th minute was the game's only score, despite constant offensive pressure by the Chargers.

Pearl City out-shot Moanalua 6-0 in the first half and 6-1 in the second.

"We just wanted to get something in, so we had to keep the pressure on and keep trying," said Maeshiro, a senior forward whose shot hit the crossbar before dropping and rolling into the net. "We just had to work as a team, talk and communicate more and help each other out."

Na Menehune had a breakaway opportunity in the 70th minute when freshman Tiana Fujimoto dribbled down into the penalty box and took a hard shot from about 12 yards out, but keeper Myra Yamamoto caught and secured the line drive.

"Pearl City has a great midfield, and we always had to take care of their offense," Moanalua coach Nikki Dela Pena said. "We had to just see what we could get for our offense, and we did get that one breakaway, but their keeper made a great save."

Chargers co-coach Frank Baumholtz said his team had opportunities in the first half but was more organized in the second.

"We stayed aggressive but had better control, and we tried to get more corner kicks so at least we would get the ball in front of the goal," Baumholtz said.

Pearl City earned five corner kicks in the second half.

MILILANI 7, KONAWAENA 0

Mililani wasted no time in finding the net, scoring in the ninth, 10th, 28th and 33rd minutes to grab a quick 4-0 lead. Tobi Kaneshiro scored the first goal when she dribbled about 20 yards down the middle of the field and shot into the lower left corner from the penalty kick line.

Chelsey Goo followed about 45 seconds later with a strong left-footed shot into the upper right corner of the net on an assist from Isabel Romero. Goo then made it 3-0 in the 28th minute on a short shot inside the back post after a long cross from Shannen Hirata on the right side.

The offensive barrage the past two days was a welcome one for the Trojans, who went 74 minutes without scoring in an OIA championship game defeat to arch rival Pearl City on Jan. 19.

"We recovered after that loss," said Goo, a junior halfback. "We have a quote on our T-shirt that says, 'The past doesn't matter. Everything that matters is what we're about to do.' "

Sasha Moscatello's goal made it 4-0 in the 33rd minute, then Mililani added Allison Kagawa's header, Hirata's penalty kick and Fronda's 30-yard goal in the second half.

"I'm pleased, to come out with a win like that," Trojans coach Ray Akiona said. "You have to take every game as one in which you want to play your best, especially in a tournament like this. You want to keep progressing.

"Hopefully, we learned our lesson (from the OIA title loss). Our pace of play was too slow in that game; we have to come out strong from the time the whistle blows. We've been working on that the last couple games."

Konawaena fell to 12-3.

KAMEHAMEHA 4, KAISER 0

Sanoe Souza and Courtney-Rae Botelho each scored in the first half, and Shelby Moriguchi and Gabriella Yates scored in the second half as the Warriors (11-2) shut out the Cougars (10-5-2).

Jacqueline Ho assisted on Moriguchi's goal in the 52nd minute, sending a cross from the right flank to the back post, where Moriguchi headed it in.

The other three goals — scored in the ninth, 31st and 76th minutes — were unassisted.

PUNAHOU 5, KAMEHAMEHA-MAUI 0

Brittney Sanford and Monica Arnold scored in the first 17 minutes, and Karli Look and Aisha Price scored in the 28th and 34th minutes, respectively, as the Buffanblu (11-1-2) took a 4-0 lead in the first half.

Bri Afoa added a goal in the 71st minute.

Kamehameha-Maui, the No. 3 seed and Maui Interscholastic League champion, fell to 15-3.

CONSOLATION

KALANI 3, KEALAKEHE 2 (PKS)

Andrea Aguirre and Rosie Chinen each scored in regulation for the Falcons and Kalani (13-3-1) won in a penalty kick shootout after two scoreless overtime periods. Kealakehe's season ends at 10-6. Ellie Villarin and Lisa Heslinga scored for the Waveriders before Chinen's goal tied it 2-2 in the 52nd minute.

KAPOLEI 1, KING KEKAULIKE 0

Chaney Lopez scored in the 49th minute for the Hurricanes (11-5-2). King Kekaulike's season ends at 11-4-1.
