HILO, Hawai'i — A 67-year-old Pahala man died yesterday from injuries he suffered when he ran off of Maia Camp Road above Pahala while riding an ATV.
Ka'u patrol officers were called to the scene at 5:18 p.m. and learned that Roy K. Okinishi was heading south on a Honda all-terrain vehicle when he lost control and ran off the left side of the road.
It is not yet known if speed or alcohol were factors, but police said Okinishi was not wearing a helmet.
He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:04 p.m.
Police have ordered an autopsy. The death will not be counted toward the island's official traffic fatality count because the crash was on a private road.
There have been at least 13 deaths of ATV riders in the last six years in Hawai'i.
