H-1 Freeway westbound reopened near Makakilo

Advertiser Staff

The H-1 Freeway's westbound lanes are open again after being flooded this afternoon between the 'Ewa and Makakilo off ramps.

Workers cleared mud and debris off the roadway, said Scott Ishikawa, state Department of Transportation spokesman.

Motorist Theresa Kuehu, a Nanakuli resident, was driving in the area and said the flooded area was at the site where workers are building a new freeway interchange. She estimated water on the freeway was three to four feet deep in that area at one point.

Vehicles were getting past the flood area single-file along the median, she said.

"It's literally a river. I'm not exaggerating," Kuehu said.

She said it appears the water is runoff from the construction site. The runoff is very brown.

Eastbound traffic on the H-1 is moving smoothly, she said.
