HANAPEPE, WAIMEA
Levees pass inspection in wake of heavy rain

Advertiser Staff

An Army Corps of Engineers team flew to Kaua'i this week to inspect the Hanapepe and Waimea levees following the recent heavy rains, a county news release said.

Deputy county engineer Ed Renaud, who accompanied the team to the sites, said a visual inspection indicates that both levees are functioning as planned, although a slight improvement to the Hanapepe levee is being considered.

"The Army Corps is looking at redesigning a small section of the Hanapepe levee, approximately 900 feet, between the swinging and Hanapepe bridges," Renaud said in the release. "Even though it's draining as it's supposed to, this modification will help to provide even better protection against flooding in the future."

Another Army Corps team is scheduled to come to the island to work on a possible design for the project, the statement said.

The Hanapepe and Waimea levees were built by the corps in the 1950s to reduce the risk of flood damage and protect life and property in the areas.
