Rain likely to continue for next several days

An upper level weather system above the state will maintain the threat today of locally heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms, the National Weather Service said.

A more typical trade wind weather pattern is expected to return to the Islands by early next week, forecasters said.

Showers are continuing across many parts of the states again this morning, the heaviest of them falling near the eastern shores of the Big Island.

Some of the rains were falling over the extreme eastern Puna District, but have generally stayed just offshore from the South Hilo District during the past couple of hours.

Here's how the next few days look at this point:

Today: Scattered showers, mainly after noon. The rain could be heavy at times. Partly cloudy, with a high near 80. East wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 69. East wind around 11 mph.

Saturday: Scattered showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 80. East wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.

Saturday night: Isolated showers. Partly cloudy, with a low around 69. East wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Sunday: Isolated showers. Partly cloudy, with a high near 80. East wind around 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Sunday night: Isolated showers. Partly cloudy, with a low around 69. East wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.
