Broken nose and all, Jamie Smith scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds last night to help 'Iolani hold off Kamehameha, 49-45, at Blaisdell Arena to claim second place in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and the ILH's remaining state tournament berth that goes with it.
The Raiders, ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 12-2 in the ILH and will begin state tournament play on Feb. 19. Kamehameha, ranked No. 10, ends its season at 7-7.
Smith, a 6-foot senior center, broke her nose on Jan. 26 against Punahou in the second-to-the-last game of the regular season. After being taken to Castle Medical Center that night, no break or fracture was found.
She was later re-examined after suffering from concussion-related headaches, and it was discovered the nose was indeed broken.
Smith sat out the regular season finale — an overtime victory over Mid-Pacific — and returned to practice last Saturday. She scored a game-high 17 points in a postseason tournament win over Sacred Hearts on Tuesday, then had 16 points in the first half last night as 'Iolani took a 30-28 lead into the break.
Smith then gave the Raiders the lead for good at 37-35 on a putback with 3:33 remaining in the third period, and added two free throws to end a 9-0 run that put them up, 44-35, with 1:19 left.
"When I'm out there, I don't feel anything, it's like there's nothing broken," said Smith, an Advertiser All-State first- team selection in 2007. "I was going to play no matter what; nothing could have kept me out this week."
The Warriors closed to 44-39 by the end of the third quarter and to 44-41 on Pua Furtado's baseline runner with 4:52 remaining in the game. But Dayna Jandoc answered with a 3-pointer 18 seconds later to make it 47-41.
Furtado swished a 3-pointer with 2:12 left to close Kamehameha to 47-45, but Smith pushed the lead to 49-45 on a layup from the right side with 45 seconds remaining.
The Warriors could not get a decent shot attempt after that.
"I don't know how many turnovers we had, but we made passes that we were not supposed to make," Warriors coach Clay Cockett said. "All year, it's been about patience."
'Iolani also benefitted from hot shooting by senior guard Chanel Hirata, who finished with 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Two of those 3-pointers and eight of her points came in the pivotal third period.
"When Jamie was out last week, we asked everybody to step up, because we didn't know if we would get her back," Raiders coach Glenn Takara said. "We didn't need one person to make up for all her scoring and rebounds, we just needed two points here and two points there from everybody. I think beating Mid-Pac was a big boost for our confidence, because we did it without Jamie."
