Mid-Pacific beats Kapaa for state D-II soccer title

WAIPAHU — In an "ouch" instead of "hooray" moment, Mid-Pacific junior Marc Obundo couldn't even celebrate his game-winning penalty kick as the Mid-Pacific boys soccer team won the state tournament tonight.

Obundo's kick gave the Owls the 4-2 advantage in penalty kicks for the 1-0 win over Kapa'a in the first year of the JN Automotive Group/HHSAA Boys Division II State Soccer Championships at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

"I was actually in pain, because I cramped up," Obundo said. "It's amazing. I've dreamed about this."

Mid-Pacific (8-6-1), the second seed and Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II representative, navigated a tough ILH schedule which payed off in the state tournament.

"It feels great," senior defender Brandt Kuioka said. "We worked hard all season. (In the ILH) every game was tough. I can't tell you how much that prepared us.

Mid-Pacific junior midfielder Jared Domingo, Kuioka, sophomore forward Cody Sullivan and Obundo made their shots, and goalkeeper Adam Bailey made one stop.

"This is the culmination of a lot of things," Mid-Pacific coach Marc Miranda said. "Our goal in the beginning of the season was to be here."

Kapa'a junior midfielder Ikaika Fuerte and freshman midfielder Taylor Langstaff made their kicks. Another Kapa'a player missed his kick, and the Warriors didn't take their final kick.

"I thought it would be close, like a 1-0 game, but things happen," Kapa'a senior midfielder Chance Bukoski said. "Unfortunately it didn't go our way."

Miranda said the season was more of a "marathon, not a sprint,"and game — scoreless through 80 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods — was yet another example of that.

The play was contained in the middle of the field for most of the game, but each team had its chances.

The Owls threatened on a throw-in by senior forward Gabriel Fernandez that was mishandled by goalkeeper Parker Blaylock and almost bounced into the goal, but a Kapa'a defender cleared it from the goalline in the eighth minute.

Kapa'a's Fuerte created a chance in the 28th minute when he dribbled down the right sideline and crossed it to the backdoor fo Bukoski, whose header just missed.

A long pass into the 18-yard box from Warriors senior defender Adam Kerlin to junior midfielder Tyler Cram missed wide left with three minutes left in the first half.

A shot by Bukoski from just outside the 6-yard box hit the left post and bounced out in the 57th minute.

Minutes later Bukoski was in on another chance when his through ball up the right side fed Tyler Cram, but his shot just missed.

With just seconds left in regulation, the Owls' Obundo was open in front of the goal, but his shot sailed high.

"We don't usually win by a lot of goals," Miranda said. "Usually we put one in and make it stick."

In other matches today, Honoka'a edged Kamehameha-Hawai'i, 3-2, for third place. In the fifth-place match, Seabury Hall beat Kaua'i, 4-3, and in the consolation final, Christian Liberty tied Kailua, 1-1.
