'Aiea boys run by Kalani, 67-38

By Stanley Lee
Advertiser Staff Writer

'AIEA — Coming up short last season has only changed attitudes this year.

The 'Aiea boys basketball team ran past Kalani, 67-38, last night in the quarterfinals of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Tournament. Senior Obie Woods scored 21 points and Joshua Chung added 16 as host Na Ali'i, the West's top seed in the tournament and defending OIA White champion, improved to 14-0.

"It was a humbling experience," Woods said of losing in the semifinals of last year's state tournament. "We were cocky. We're more focused now."

Woods said 'Aiea, ranked ninth in the Advertiser's statewide poll of media and coaches, is taking each game as if it's possibly the last one. With Kalani (3-11) scoring 59 points against 'Aiea in a regular-season game, the most an opponent has scored against Na Ali'i, there was extra incentive to pull off the win.

"We had to shut them down in the first (quarter)," Woods said.

'Aiea did just that, running off to a 15-0 lead in the game's first seven minutes. Kalani's John Kahalewai broke the drought with 51 seconds left with a basket that made it 15-2.

'Aiea continued to build on the lead in the second and led 31-10 at halftime. Instead of forcing the issue inside, 'Aiea opted to go outside and shoot over Kalani's zone.

"We can shoot from the first to the last guy," 'Aiea coach Wyatt Tau said. "Our best 3-point shooters come off the bench."

Kalani made a brief run in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 39-25 after back-to-back 3-pointers by Jonathon Cheng with 1:23 remaining. But 'Aiea scored the next six points to close out the quarter, and continued to build on its lead in the fourth.

Twelve players scored for 'Aiea and the team knocked down seven 3-pointers.

Cheng led Kalani with 13 points and Anthony Asuncion added 10.

'Aiea faces McKinley in Tuesday's semifinals, a rematch of last year's OIA White title game. Farrington will play Kaiser in the other semifinal.

McKinley is the defending state Division II champion.

"McKinley is tough," Tau said. "We have to pressure the ball. (McKinley coach) Bob (Morikuni) will have his boys ready. We have to be ready."

Woods said the team's seniors know their time is running out.

"Not too many of us can play at the next level," Woods said. "We have to play like it's our last game. That keeps us moving."
